Slovenia, stage 5 of 6

Slovenia 5, from Kanal to Postojna

Extreme heat!

My plan, as on every other day, was to get up early and set off early. And so I did: I got up early. But I spent a good while chatting with the owners of the guesthouse. They recommended I stop halfway for lunch at a farm that served a good meal. I still regret not taking their advice, but the truth is the farm was neither halfway nor anywhere near me: I’d have had to make a detour of about 10 kilometres. Oh well, I’ll find somewhere to eat.

Once again, kilometres and kilometres of cycle path. They never cease to amaze me.

Today has been one of the days when the heat is hurting me most. I prefer heat to cold, but everything has its limits. Today’s route is a constant up and down on tracks and back roads, with a good climb at the end.

I went through loads of villages and small towns, and I think I stopped at every single river I came across to cool off a bit. The heat is stifling, and shade is not exactly plentiful. The last part runs through Slovenia’s wine country, and I ride past vineyard after vineyard.

I’m nearing the end and it looks like there won’t be an ambush today. And no, there was no ambush, but five kilometres from the Postojna campsite two bees got into my helmet and, of course, stung me, adding a bit of excitement to the end of the day.

And so, after almost 90 kilometres, I reach the Postojna campsite. Tomorrow, a rest day to visit the caves and Predjama Castle, near Postojna, and do a bit of sightseeing.
