Mongolia Bike Challenge, stage 7 of 9

Mongolia Bike Challenge 8

The great snowfall

Last night I slept like a baby. The previous stage had been brutal and in the evening the temperature plummeted. Bright and early, as usual, the alarm went off. I crawl slowly out of my sleeping bag, good grief it’s cold!!! Oh well, it’ll warm up. I start putting my gear on, heart rate monitor strap, bib shorts, etc., open the tent door and this is what I see

Well, where am I supposed to go dressed like this? Briefing: it doesn’t seem very sensible to start this stage, especially since we’d be heading uphill. Apart from the ground being impassable, I think someone could get lost (GPS isn’t compulsory). In the end common sense prevails and the stage is cancelled. Great, rest day!! If you can call 8 hours of off-roading, with even a bit of trekking, a rest day

Nobody had the guts to ride down in the 4x4, heh. Well, there’s no denying we enjoyed some wonderful scenery, even if at times we wondered what on earth we were doing in that mess. I think Carlos Abellán, ex-Liberty rider, would agree with me.

At last we reach the camp. Good news awaits us… today is our last night in a tent! And tomorrow, the ninth stage, the longest of all at 144km. Bring it on!
